Stratford Cullitons’ Adair scores four in win over Cambridge Winter Hawks

CAMBRIDGE — Cohen Adair wasn’t wearing that Famous Blue Raincoat.

Perhaps the Stratford Cullitons’ poetic puck-pusher should have.

“My parents named me after Leonard Cohen,” said Adair, after scoring four goals in the Cullitons’ 5-2 Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League playoff win over the Cambridge Winter Hawks before 241 at Galt Arena on Tuesday.

His dad Tim was a long-ago Cullies defender.

Clearly, dad was also a fan of Leo, that raspy-voiced Canadian singer-songwriter.

But does young Cohen Adair dig his namesake’s music? Suzanne? Sisters of Mercy? That Hallelujah tune K.D. Lang served up at the Olympics?

“I’ve heard maybe one song from him, it’s not too bad,” said Adair, whose Cullitons return to Cambridge on Wednesday for Game 2 of their best-of-seven first-round series.

“I’m definitely not an avid listener. But he’s got good music.”

Opening the playoffs with a Quad is pretty melodic stuff, too.

“The one—I’m not even sure it went in,” said Adair of his third-period roof job over Hawks goalie Jeff Flagler.

“I guess the ref had a better view than I did.”

The Winter Hawks, who got goals from Cody Hall and Brett Priestap, better take a closer look at trying to shut down Adair on Wednesday.

“We got the matchup, for the most part, that we wanted,” Hawks coach Paul Jennings explained. “We had our best against their best. He had a hot hand tonight.”

History is on the Culliton side. The Winter Hawks have never eliminated Stratford in their 27-year Jr. B history.

Five times they’ve met in the playoffs. Five times, the Cullies have won.

“Is that right?” Adair said.

“I guess the pressure is on us, then.”

Kurtis Bailey also scored for Stratford.
